In an era where safety and security are top priorities, bullet resistant glass has become essential across a wide range of industries—from banks and military installations to retail storefronts and residential buildings. But not all bullet resistant glass is created equal. Different levels of protection are required depending on the threat environment, and that’s where understanding bullet resistant glass levels becomes crucial. At Shottglass , we specialize in advanced ballistic glazing solutions that meet rigorous safety standards while offering clear visibility and aesthetic flexibility. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key levels of bullet resistant glass, the testing standards behind them, and how to choose the right level for your application. What Is Bullet Resistant Glass? Despite the term "bulletproof glass" being widely used, no glass is completely bulletproof—only bullet resistant to varying degrees. Bullet resistant glass , also known as ballistic glass, is designed to absorb and disperse the energy of a bullet, preventing penetration and minimizing the risk of injury or property damage. The construction typically includes layers of polycarbonate, glass, and proprietary interlayers laminated under high pressure. At Shottglass , we use multi-layered compositions engineered to balance performance, clarity, and thickness, ensuring both protection and usability. Bullet Resistant Glass Levels Explained Bullet resistant glass is categorized into levels based on the type of ammunition it can withstand. The most widely used standards are from Underwriters Laboratories (UL 752) and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) . At Shottglass , we manufacture bullet resistant glass rated from UL Level 1 up to UL Level 8 , meeting or exceeding industry benchmarks. UL 752 Levels: Level 1: Resists 9mm full metal jacket rounds at 1175 ft/s. Ideal for convenience stores, residential doors, and low-risk areas. Level 2: Stops .357 Magnum jacketed soft points at 1250 ft/s. Often used in schools, pharmacies, and retail settings. Level 3: Designed for .44 Magnum semi-jacketed hollow points at 1350 ft/s. A popular choice for banks, guard booths, and cashier enclosures. Level 4: Offers protection against .30 caliber rifles (M1 rifle) at 2540 ft/s. Typically found in government buildings or sensitive security zones. Levels 5–8: These levels defend against higher-caliber rifles like 7.62mm NATO or .308 Winchester. Frequently used in military applications, embassies, and law enforcement facilities. Each level is tested for multiple shots to ensure consistent performance under real-world conditions. How Is Bullet Resistant Glass Tested? The UL 752 testing process involves firing specific ammunition types at the glass from a controlled distance. The goal is not just to prevent penetration but also to control spall—the glass fragments that may fly off the non-impacted side. To pass, no bullet should penetrate, and no spall should endanger a person on the protected side. Shottglass’s ballistic glazing products are tested under these exact standards in certified labs. We also offer custom ballistic simulations and reports for high-risk clients needing tailored solutions. Shottglass Bullet Resistant Glass Solutions At Shottglass , we go beyond basic compliance. Choosing the Right Bullet Resistant Glass Level Selecting the right level of bullet resistant glass depends on a thorough threat assessment . Here are some guiding principles: Retail stores or lobbies : Levels 1–2 are usually sufficient to deter handguns and reduce smash-and-grab risks. Banks or pharmacies : Level 3 offers higher assurance against common handgun threats. Police stations or government buildings : Level 4 and above offer necessary defense against high-powered rifles. Military or tactical facilities : Levels 5–8 are essential for extreme ballistic scenarios. Shottglass offers free consultations to help architects, builders, and business owners determine the appropriate security level based on environment, foot traffic, and local crime statistics. Additional Features and Upgrades Beyond stopping bullets, modern bullet resistant glass can include: Fire resistance Blast mitigation UV and solar protection Anti-graffiti or scratch-resistant coatings One-way vision systems Thermal insulation properties Shottglass integrates these options seamlessly with your ballistic glass, delivering not only safety but energy efficiency and aesthetic performance. Several Processing
We have built up two automatic cutting lines. The Intermac Cutting Table supports the maximum precision and minimum cutting tolerance. Accurate cutting is the priority of all the further glass and mirror processing.
To give our customer the glass of best edging quality and precision, we set 6 cnc work centers to grind edges and corners on different kind of glass and mirror. Min workable size is 250*200mm and max workable size is 3660*2500mm, tolerance +-0.5mm, 1.6mm-19mm thickness.
Colorful logo and graphics can be printed on glass and mirror products by our silk screen printing line and UV-printer. Skilled engineers can give you solutions regarding glass pattern design, and anti-UV ink.
We set up 2 lines of double edging grinding line to combine accuracy and efficiency. Workable on C-edge and flat-edge, range 65mm-3100mm, matte and polished.
Glass tempering furnace can produce half tempered glass 1.3mm-19mm, and fully tempered glass 3mm-19mm. Everyday capacity is 5000sqm.
Irregular holes and ultra thick glass can not be processed with general cutting table. We set up 3 waterjet cutting lines to make custom glass holes. The advantage is that Waterjet finish does not need further processing before tempering.
We have 8 acid reacting pool for matte glass, ag glass, and acid etched glass. The horizontal producing line max processing size is 2850*4200mm, and vertical pool max glass processing size is 2000*2800.
Our history started since 1996, from a family-owned factory to a global target company.
3 plants of total 20000sqm workshop enables us to do all glass processing including precision processing, acid surface processing, and mirror fabricating.
We have developed an experienced team 24hour ready to make your designing to real products and give you whole process services.
Our tempered glass panel products surpass requirements of GB15763.2-2005, and LED Mirror is FCC certified with UL certified components. Pattern glass is certified by CMA&CNAS.
